Entrevista a The Suppressives: Que les den a las Riot Grrrls y a las Only Men Bands

¡ORIGINAL ENGLISH VERSION BELOW!

- ¿Cómo describirías a tus compañeros de Last Night?

THE SUPPRESSIVES INTERVIEW: FUCK THE RIOT GRRRLS AND ONLY MEN BANDS

In occasion of the visit of this simple and effective punk rock band, coming from the doom center of Paris, we've spoke with her singer and frontgirl Marie So, to know about this mysterious formation that only let us see live videos made from groupies, and that we once had the pleasure to see them rehearsing in their city. Firm ideas, catchy songs, and an equal mix of genres. We hope you like 'em the same way we do! And you'll have the possibility to see them live at 7th November in Els Carlins (Manresa) and 8th in Bar Ceferinos (Barcelona). Go on them!

- Where comes from, the idea of forming the band? Tell us a bit of The Suppressives story.

It's François the drummer, and Peggy the bass player who created the band. I think that the idea was just to try and play these instruments for the first time! Then came Morgan, the guitar player, and finally me!

- How every member contributes to the band?

It's a very communist band, everybody gives a little for the good of it! The truth is we don't work a lot at home, we just try things on rehearsals…

- Did they have another music projects? Which ones?

Peggy is the only real faithful to the band. The others including me sometimes try new options. At the moment, François plays in a duo drums/guitar with a guy from Dame Blanche. And I'm part of a band called Calypso, a mix of calypso music and Badalamenti songs.

- For people than never had listened to you, how would you describe your sound?

It's kind of a classical punk rock music with spontaneous lyrics!

- Where did the name come from? There is no spanish translation for The Suppressives...

It took us a so long time to find a name, nearly 2 years, but we didn't play in concerts yet and it didn't matter! One night I was watching a documentary about the Scientology, and learnt that the "Suppressives" are the people blacklisted, because they criticize, have left or wanna left the sect (in France this is a sect, maybe not in Spain?!). As we had also think before at the name of "The Ron Hubbard's", and because it was very hard to find a name, we chose this one!

- It’s not easy to be a frontgirl. How did you decide it? How do you prepare for every gig?

I have a pretty serious job and I'm so happy to shout on stage! It's a good feeling, not the same pression you may have at work, at a silly meeting in front of people you have not chosen. Before going on stage, it's 2 pints, 4 cigarettes, 8 pees!

- Which band influenced you? Can you recommend us a few?

We all have different influences, but in common we have the punk music and classic bands like X-Ray Spex, Penetration, The Pack…I try to guess what the others would have say…Peggy may have answered northern soul, François would have tried to sell his records from his label Teenage Menopause Rds and Morgan would certainly have answered he is sad about Lou Reed's death, hehe

- My congratulations for being a mix genres band! Now that it seems that polemic between maleness in music and riot grrrls bands, what you think about it? In your opinion, is there a real difference between genres in music? Or in playing with girls or with boys?

It's true we're the perfect mix, 50/50 and it's okay for me because with only 2 girls, we already have proposals for special evenings including roller derby and girl's bands playing. So not too many girls for not being classified a pussy band, and not too many men to keep fresh air at the rehearsals…

- After 3 years playing, are you planning to record your songs? So the fans can hear your hit “I Hate My Job” from our home stereo! How the record will sound like?

We plan to record right after the tour, as we only see each other every 3 months, it would be the perfect moment to capitalize on these few dates. Friends of us have already purpose their help, like Jon Von (Rip Offs) who could help us having the right dirty sound!

- What can you tell us about your tour in south of France & Spain? How are you preparing?

It's the first time for everyone, we're all quite familiar with concerts and long long nights, but not touring with our band….I personally wonder what am I gonna wear, if I will succeed shouting every night and if my back won't hurt too much from sleeping on the floor!

- How do you describe your pals from Last Night?

Good companions for the road, dangerous companions for the night ! The funny thing for me is to tour as a couple with Pat, Last Night's singer… And talking about their music, love their songs, it's far more elaborate and intriguing than what we do, I guess we'll learn from them!

- Thanks a lot! We are proud to see you here!
