(Otstoy - Tupym/Sakhara) (Demo, Enero/Abril 2014)

¡TRANSLATION IN THE COMMENTS SECTION !

  1. In the depths of our gmail, after months looking for a demo worth reviewing, we bumped into Kostya Kayro, a 22yo dude from Siberia, now based in St. Petersburg.
After a long period playing guitar in No Fuzz, band whom in their day opened for The Horrors, Kostya started a few months ago Отстой (Otstoy, what would mean 'shit’, in a lame, non-scatological way) this new experiment/one-man-band project and for which he has recently found a drummer so they can start doing gigs. Sign, we pray, means an upcoming European tour and a physical release as he so much deserves.

The second after starting "Молиться против тебя" (Praying against you), the first song from his first digital EP, our eyes lit up in joy. Lo-fi dirt à la Total Slacker and The Spits, with one stricking guitar, closer to the sound of The Stooges than to the modern garage, but also keeping similarities to The White Stripes. (I'm a monkey) is not too far from its predecessor, being something like a mix between Ty Segall in his first era, but taking a twist somewhat like the Orrall brothers, more heavy and rhythmical, in a sort of garage-rock that bears similarities to that of the Oblivians. The trend towards the dark is accentuated approaching the end, where names like Hunters, Heavy Times or even iceage come to mind, in spite of the difference set by Kostya’s voice, careless, in the background, hidden and often out of tune, but what you end up loving so much.
Despite this connection with the yankee garage, Oh Sees or Ty (references he himself cites), we could say that the thing here is quite different. As he tells us, having a winter that lasts seven months totally affects how you see the genre, resulting in a Russian version of garage-rock, less cheerful and sunny, and at the same time influenced by his neighbours Sonic Death.

And fresh from the oven, another EP (also digital, for now), without moving away from the previously drawn line, maintains the level and even surpasses at times. (Sahara) is the jewel that gives title, a track that begins as a wink to "No Fun", but immediately comes alive, catchy as hell, like something out of one of the earliest Jacuzzi Boys.
(Further away there’s only downhill), Otstoy displays an incredible ability to create these trance-inducing melodies, slow, dense and perfect, while "У меня нет тебя" (I don’t have you) would become the only sour note, a sort of indie pop ballad almost too soft and dreamy, that only makes us hope, eagerly if anything, new material from our new second most beloved Russian.
